McLaren the new gaffer

I suppose this would be less disruptive as he's already in the England camp. I can't stand his sh%t eating grin when he gives interviews. Thoughts? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/sport/football.html?in_article_id=385134&in_page_id=1779&ico=Homepage&icl=TabModule&icc=England%20job&ct=5

  • not sure what I think on this: he doesnt exactly inspire me but was probably the best English candidate given his experience - its a lot of talk for a not very earth shattering announcement.

  • As the England first 11 virtually picks itself, his only job will be bringing in one or two new faces as Becks ages or Rooney and Owen recover their incessant injuries.'

He's inherited a decent chance of Qualifying from Group E for 2008.
And I can't see beyond Robinson, Young or Johnson, any of Terry, Rio, Anton, Campbell, or King, Cashley, Lamps, Becks, Cole, Stevie-G, Owen and Rooney with Defoe and Crouch on deck. If Bent or Wollcot or Ashton or Parnaby make progress, maybe he'll have to work a little more. I can't see him imposing some rigid new tactics.

And unless that team's successful in 2008, the button to release the ejector seat will be pushed in favor of who knows.

I don't reckon this is more than a 4-year stint and as long as most of the current guys stay uninjured, modest but not overwhelming success will ensue.

  • We were Intertoto champions, which is to UEFA what UEFA is to the Champions League which is as satisfying as walking into a boozer and finding they have a 3 pound pint and pie special. - So take that Steve McLaren
