Hissoner duped - North End shocked

For those not from around here, that's Mayor Menino proudy hoisting the World Cup trophy. He actually kissed it. "Italian Americans" queued up for hours to pay $5 to get their picture taken with it. The North End practically had a festival for the cup.

Only it was not the real cup but a cheap replica Budweiser has been parading around the US.

This makes me happy.

  • The greatest picture ever was in the tabloid Boston Herald this morning: a photo that showed a jubilant Italian dude from the North End hoisting the fake Jules Rimet...he was wearing surgical gloves (to protect the trophy's gold plating from damage, apparently)!!! CLASSIC.

Chris - you have no idea how many people came into our restaurant the other day GLOWING about how they had paid $5 to get their pictures taken with the cup. This is one of the all-time goofs!!!

  • Sure you would have to be an idiot to believe they would have the real one. Rumour has it they don't even use the real one for the presentation after the final. I heard about this on Wednesday night at training and we were laughing at the idea. Am surprised it was actually revealed so quickly though. I am reminded of that monorail episode of the Simpsons.

  • I think growing up in Ireland you just expect to be screwed like this all the time - comes in handy now and again.
