Three Lions, the Yankess and Rio

Just saw a segment on Sky Sports with Rio Ferdinand signing autographs at an officially sanctioned FA event. Besides wearing the Three Lions and having Nationwide in the background, Rio thought it appropriate to wear a NY yankees cap. I understand that Man U has a marketing tie-up with the Evil Empire and people in the UK wear yankee caps as a fashion statement but don't believe wearing a yankees cap while representing England is appropriate. For that matter, don't believe wearing a cap of any team in any sport while representing your national team is appropriate.

  • Rio was, apparently, out back smoking the California gold (again) before the event.

This does not surprise me (wearing NY cap)...shameless promotion is all a part of the modern sports world. Have you checked out baseball box scores on espn.com lately? Well, if you haven't, be prepared for a full-length pop-up feature movie ad!

Remember the days when the Internet was like a bunch of mom and pop stores? No longer.

It is wholly inappropriate for Rio to wear anything but England kit at these events, or at least a dress suit to show professionalism. I liken his appearance to serving black and tans in an Irish pub (which happens in the USA; the equivalent of serving a Himmler in a Tel Aviv bar).

  • Nice vid John, that deserves a post of its own! I recognized Robson, Stuart Pearce and Alan Ball but who are all the other geezers? Englishmen all look alike to me. (BTW - did you notice the link loads "Carlsberg" into the Google search window, if you have one on your browser bar? Tricky adverts!)

  • The keeper is Peter Shilton isn't it? He was the guy who let in the two goals to Maradona in 86 :-)

Chris Waddle was the guy chasing the van.

Peter Beardsley was in the bike.

Terry Butcher is the one with the bacon butties.

Peter Reid clocked some guy as well. Diving bastard. Should have got up quicker in 85 when Moran was sent off.

  • Ah Des Walker was the only one I missed. Had to google to find out who that was. He is just seen for a second running down the stairs and in the background in the dressing room.
