Rock the Crossbar

Wednesday, April 19

So as of April 2006, here are the FIFA world rankings. If I remember rightly, the US were recently pasted by Germany and only drew with Jamaica yet somehow have moved up to 4th confirming that these are the most bent rankings in all of sports.... Nigeria have shot up , Italy apparently are crap... these simply are laughable. http://www.fifa.com/en/mens/statistics/index/0,2548,All-Apr-2006,00.html

  • What a load of crap. The main question is why. Which American is bribing FIFA to put the US at 4th? Otherwise, this has to be the work of hackers.
Italy is 14th and Germany is 19th.

  • What's shocking about these obviously ludicrous rankings is not that the US is higher rated than many better national sides. That's just the funny part.

The shocking part is that these rankings actually count for something, namely group seeding for the World Cup.

It's high time that this farce was overhauled.

  • Quite agree Steve, using these as any method of World Cup ranking is a joke - it will be in 2010 that you will want to avoid being in Pot one which will contain South Africa by default, America, Mexico, Nigeria etc... Of course you could get Brazil... rankings out says Burke.

  • Hmmm...interesting that my previous posts ridiculing the US men's team were so wholly condemned, yet everyone here now sees fit to justify my earlier comments with an attack on the FIFA rankings.

Three and out in Germany, plain and simple.

I say trash the entire worldwide ranking system - instead, use only regional confederation ratings based on qualification for the WC, other tournaments, etc.

Of course, FIFA knows that absurd rankings lead to controversy, controversy leads to media attention, media attention leads to fan involvement...you get the idea!

  • No, no-one minds you bashing American soccer, that was going on LONG before you came on the scene: just have to balance those views a little every now and then! The rankings though do need to go or at least serve no seeding purpose.
